Charles Petzold

Beethoven composed two Romances for Violin and Orchestra, but the first was published second as Opus 50 (Day 109) so that one is called No. 2. The Romance No. 1 (Opus 40) probably dates from 1801. Like the earlier Romance, it is a single slow movement of much lyrical beauty.

The Romance can also be performed with piano accompaniment — and sometimes by the same violinist who plays it with an orchestra.
