String Trio No. 4 in D Major (Opus 9, No. 2), 1797–98

A lovely performance of Beethoven’s 4th string trio in a church in Cambridge Massachusetts.

After a brief introduction in the second movement Andante of Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 4, the violin and viola sing a duet from an Italian opera, accompanied by mandolin, and then the cello joins in as well. The 3rd movement Trio section is invaded by a swarm of alien insects.

This performance is just from 1990, but it looks like it's 30 years old. The all-star ensemble consists of Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zuckerman, and Lynn Harrell.

In retrospect, we can perhaps detect in Beethoven’s Opus 9 String Trios a preparation for something just a little bigger. Beethoven is gaining a better understanding of string writing. He’s on the verge of giving in to that irresistible urge to add just… one… more… violin…
