Beethoven’s WoO 72 variations are based on the aria “Une fièvre brûlante” (“A Burning Fever”) from French composer André Grétry’s 1784 opera “Richard Coeur-de-lion.” The opera hadn’t been performed in Vienna recently, but a ballet using Grétry’s music was staged in June 1795.
