Not much is known of this composition, except that only two movements survive of what might have been a three-movement work.

On 21 September 1792, the French National Convention abolished the monarchy and proclaimed the First Republic. Earlier that year, France had declared war on Austria, and Beethoven’s home of Bonn had become precariously close to a war zone.
