#Beethoven250 Day 18
Cantata on the Accession of Leopold II (WoO 88), 1790

Beethoven’s second cantata celebrates the succession of Joseph II by his brother Leopold II as Holy Roman Emperor.

Between 1789 and 1792, Beethoven gained valuable orchestral experience in the Bonn opera house playing viola for some 50 different operas, most of them now obscure. The only ones familiar to modern audiences are Don Giovanni, Marriage of Figaro, and Abduction from the Seraglio.
